The Story

Art, Reinvention & The Journey of Finding My Own Voice

Art has always been a part of who I am.

Growing up on the East Side of Atlanta, I was drawn to art, architecture, fashion, and the way things were put together. In high school, I studied art, architectural drawing, and mechanical drawing, earning recognition for my work through the Atlanta Public School System. I later continued my studies in Pre Architectural Engineering at DeKalb College.

But my journey into becoming a professional artist didn't happen overnight.

I spent more than 20 years working in the art industry, helping create and sell original artwork to major retailers, hospitality companies, and commercial clients across the country. That experience taught me far more than the business of art. It taught me how artwork lives in a space, how it connects with people, and how important it is for art to tell a story.

Then, in 2013, the company I had spent so many years building my career was closed.

It could have been the end of my career in art.

Instead, it became the beginning of something of my own.

In 2014, I started Chawn Murrah Fine Art.

What began as a leap of faith became an opportunity to finally create without limitations—to develop my own language, my own techniques, and my own vision.

My work is heavily influenced by my Atlanta roots, fashion, architecture, culture, and the people and experiences that have shaped me. I draw inspiration from artists such as Picasso and Romare Bearden, but my greatest inspiration comes from everyday life and the challenge of seeing familiar things differently.

Over time, my work evolved beyond traditional painting.

I began incorporating found objects, repurposed materials, textiles, collage, dimensional elements, and layers of paint into my pieces. These materials allow me to create artwork that doesn't simply hang on a wall—it reaches into the space around it.

My 3D mixed-media pieces have become one of the defining elements of my work. Many are inspired by fashion and my personal connection to it. My mother was a seamstress, and growing up around fabric, clothing, patterns, and craftsmanship left a lasting impression on me. Today, I often reinterpret that influence through sculptural dresses, designer-inspired forms, texture, and unexpected materials.

For me, repurposing materials is more than a creative technique.

It's a metaphor.

Something that may have been overlooked, discarded, or forgotten can be transformed into something meaningful and beautiful. I see that same idea in people, in communities, and in life itself.

That spirit of transformation is at the heart of Chawn Murrah Fine Art.

Today, my work includes Originals and Reproductions, dimensional mixed-media artwork, paintings, and custom pieces created for residential, commercial, hospitality, and private collectors. I've had the opportunity to show my work at galleries, art festivals, exhibitions, and events throughout the country.

But the mission remains simple:

Create art that makes people stop, look again, and feel something.

I believe great art doesn't always have to explain itself. Sometimes it simply needs to make you curious.

Every piece I create is part of a larger story—a story about identity, heritage, fashion, creativity, resilience, and transformation.

And that story continues.
